Early retirement

An early pension is available up to 5 years before the standard pension age, for claimants who have completed the full stagiu (art. 58, Legea nr. 360/2023), with a reduction for each month claimed early.

Conditions

An early pension is available up to 5 years (60 months) before the standard pension age, for claimants who have completed the full stagiu — 35 years for men, 33 years and 7 months for women (art. 58 alin. (1), Legea nr. 360/2023). That is a stricter condition than the 15-year minimum stagiu required for the ordinary pension.

The reduction — and why it is not permanent

For each month claimed early, the points are reduced by 0,40 % (art. 58 alin. (3), Tabelul nr. 4) — this is the baseline-case rate (claimants with up to one year of stagiu beyond the full requirement); the law states lower rates for claimants with more extra service, not modelled on this page. Unlike some other systems, this reduction in Romania is not permanent: once the standard pension age is reached, the early pension converts ex officio into an ordinary old-age pension, with the reduction removed (art. 60 alin. (1), Legea nr. 360/2023).

No provision was found setting a ceiling on the total reduction — the law states only the per-month rate, banded by extra stagiu.
