Short answers to the questions asked most often about the old-age pension, under Legea nr. 360/2023 and the instruments in force for 2026.
When can I retire?
Men at 65 years. For women the standard age is also 65, but it is reached through a transition still under way — for the current period, 62 years and 7 months. See the pension age page for details.
How much stagiu do I need?
A minimum stagiu of 15 years is required to receive any pension at all. For the ordinary pension, alongside the standard age, the law requires the full stagiu — 35 years for men, 33 years and 7 months for women (current period). The early pension requires the same full-stagiu condition.
How is the pension amount calculated?
Total points — built from your own earnings measured against each year's average wage — are multiplied by the reference point value, currently 81,00 lei. The law states an annual indexation formula for that value, but it has stayed unchanged in 2025 and 2026. Details on the how the pension is calculated page.
Is there a maximum pension?
No provision was found setting a maximum pension in Legea nr. 360/2023 — not on total points, not on the reference point value, and not directly on the pension amount.
Can I retire early, and what does it cost?
Yes, up to 5 years early, if you hold the full stagiu. It costs a reduction of 0,40 % for each month claimed early — but that reduction is not permanent: it is removed ex officio once the standard pension age is reached.
